BlackHat

This stuff FASCINATES me!
Blackhat.com

The Archive is awesome, to read some of the white papers on exploits and attack vectors and just amazing ways to utilize technology to discover things. Something that blew my mind was the forensic-proof rootkit paper, 44 pages of how to dig in and confuse the hell out of investigators while doing whatever.

This stuff doesn’t fascinate me for the malicious reasons, but the sheer genius that is used to leverage the tech on hand to come to new outcomes.

Lytebox is here!

So I’ve always liked the lightbox/lightbox2 javascript effects, but whenever I tried to use it I couldn’t get it right.

And then came Lytebox, this thing is crazy fast compared to lightbox2 and is still being developed. Not to mention that it is one script compared to 5 or 6, it’s brilliant!

I will be using the Lytebox effect on more pictures I put on here, the post below with Conner has the effect.

Technology

Technology is an interesting and very much evolving entity.

What if you had a hand in the next generation technology? Or the generation after that? What would you want available that is beyond bleeding edge today?

Who is to say you are not the driver of this tech, and how do we exercise our ability to push on the creators of tech to get there or make it ourself?

Droid

I bought the Moto Droid, it rocks!

They have rooted it, put busybox on it, and are working on recovery images.

I just saw a commercial from AT&T about Verizon where they say VZ customers can’t surf the web and talk on the phone. So I tried it out, and it’s true. The Droid disables the data link when the phone is engaged, I wonder why they did this?

Very interesting.

More Linux

Thanks to a friend at work I’m going to be installing OpenVZ on a box at home, I think I may turn the old desktop that is currently running a VM OS, but not doing anything, into this OpenVZ box to build 3 little VMs inside of it.

2 web servers and a load balancer.

Then I’ll have to play with some php code to get it to display the server names and have a little website thats routed between the machines.

Sounds like a BLAST!

The droid is still not rooted, but is still awesome!

Home

I have had 2 or 3 DELL computers for years that I finally turned into little centOS boxes a while back, I have apache and mysql running on them so they act as good little webservers and actually on a few occasions made at least one available to the wold by my IP.

Well now the day has come (a few days ago) where the boxes are here and not just by IP anymore: http://demons.homedns.org:45457. I have to use a higher port because Cox doesn’t like me being a web host :P .

I have a ventrilo server set up and in the process of configuring a IRC server. Like the site says: more functionality and information to come soon.

Microsoft SMB Zero Day Bug

This is a serious deal, there is a zero day exploit that is out there that works… However, you’d have to poke some serious holes in your firewall to open yourself up to it. (Don’t freak out yet) If you know how to configure your firewall just make sure you have port 139 and 445 blocked and you should be golden… They need to patch soon as it really is simple to drop a Vista machine.

More on this soon hopefully.

~Update~

Windows Server 2008 is susceptible to the flaw and drops like Vista.

Windows Server 2008 r2 (Windows7 like) does not crash to the flaw.

Is going to ask why we are not using r2 at work now.

VMs! and Life

So I downloaded and installed Xen Server by Citrix, except now I need to learn how to create VMs. Next adventure.

I am thinking about changing the front page to something a little bit better coded, rather than my chicken scratch. I’ve downloaded a few php CMSs that I’ll be trying out, most likely on the home systems first.

The boys are doing well and I get to go to Washington DC this week. By the way, when you start dreaming about system/application monitoring and spreadsheets something is very Very wrong.

Windows7

So I have Windows7 install on my newest desktop, it’s pretty slick… Aero is nice, Linux calls it Vista… it’s the 32bit install though. So I got the 7000 build of the 64bit and have yet to install it. I am waiting for a friend to hook me up with possibly a more recent/stable build off of technet if it will even work.

The reason for me writing about it however is the lame fact that M$ is going to release the different versions of W7. Yay for marketing stunts, don’t get the ‘starter edition’ it only lets you run 3 programs at a time, WHAT THE HELL?! Seriously folks?

Anyhow, the boys are growing like crazy we have pictures I need to upload. I am trying to get into a Systems Administrator position here at work, it sounds like its almost a done deal but still waiting on the offer.

Updated Look

I played with a little bit of JavaScript last weekend on the front page of Demonwerx, lemme know what ya think. I will be adding more stuff to that as I put time towards it. I need to build a page for the Baby stuff too, the space is there its just a matter of time.

Everything is really just a matter of time…

Skeeered!

Word on the streets is it that Windows is going down… as an OS they probably will not go down for a very long time simply because of market saturation and fear of moving to a different OS. I actually don’t know how it is going to play out nor am I going to make any predictions, no info means guessing, guessing = most likely wrong. (I analyze for a living and must have data to do analysis)

So… what would I be scared of? Well, nuking and paving my current big gaming machine. I don’t know what all I have installed on the machine (I know I have W o W and Call of Duty 4) and some other programs. What else I have stashed in there is a good question and that is what is making me hesitant to get the cleaning started.

What about nuking other boxes? Oh yeah, no hesitation there! I am currently in the process of cleaning up a 120 (112Gb usable) disk so I can drop Suse10.3 (OpenSuse) Linux on that machine. Why? Well first it is a stable install that actually went through just fine on my laptop (it’s an old ~900Mhz 348Mb of Ram AMD box). If I am going to learn a *nix might as well drop it on my secondary box and get some use out of it. Currently that box is my Dev and Questing box, I do some HTML work on it for my lvl19.com site and use it for wowhead info when playing wow.

It’ll be fun, I might have it installed tonight or tomorrow night.

Theme: Change

Theme Change – you will have to click on the Post to read all of it… goes with the theme.

I have changed the theme of the site a few times. I was annoyed that the nice simple themes for some reason place the menu at the bottom of the site, instead of on the side. I enjoyed the last theme I had here, so I will poke through the Code.

The upgrade to the lastest and greatest WordPress went very well, and the site isn’t blocked at work anymore.

And I added a gallery.

HTML

So I took an HTML class and found out that I wasn’t going to be learning the HTML 4.01 like I signed up to learn. Why? you ask… Because 4.01 is not the current standard! It appears we have moved on to XHTML (extensible Hypertext Markup Language) I can’t remember the number behind the XHTML standard.

So coding is cool, but I always struggled with CSS as I thought it was mainly regarding colors and was seemingly very different from HTML and PHP, but I ran into it everywhere. I had tried to stumble through a book once before with little avail. Sitting down in class I learned two incredibly important lessons or parts of good XHTML coding -

and basic CSS.

I will now be working on the SoundWear Apparel website and probably will make a new splash page for Demon Werx as well.

Cool stuff!

Apache/PHP/MySQL

So my friend Milo sent me to a website PortableApps.com where I found a very cool little set of programs that allow me to run an Apache Server with PHP and MySQL with a one click install.

The package is called XAMPP. The home page is XAMPP and this thing is Awesome!

I just rebuilt one of the triplets to run the XAMPP package and I believe it will allow me to run a Mercury Mail server as well. I will keep this updated and possibly link more stuff too it.

Coding – Authenticate me

The Coding Gauntlet has been thrown!

I am currently working on a PHP based authentication page, this appeared “easy” but it is not. It’s freakin cool and fun though!
