VM Server Box (Wish list)

So in an exercise to build a VM box that will take care of replacing all of the other machines on my desk I have employed Newegg.com with some server cues from HP/Dell.

Here’s the wish list:
Processor – Intel Xeon E5520 (Newegg) — Buy 1 proc now, buy a second later.
Heat Sink – Intel HS (Newegg) — Buy another with proc #2 later
MoBo – Intel S5520HC (Newegg) — Dual CPU support, onboard dual nic and video, 24GB of ram
HDD – WD 500GB 7200RPM (Newegg) x2 (maybe x3)
Ram – Kingston 6GB kit (Kingston) — buy another set for the 2nd proc when needed

Things to left to find/price out:
Power Supply, Case

Cost:
Proc (x1) = 384.99
Mobo = 434.99
RAM (1x6GB) = 242.00
HDD (x1) = 69.99
Heat Sink = 29.45

Current desired config cost (before tax) = 1231.41

Things to add in the future:
Proc x2, 6GB more of Ram, 2 NICs, 1 Heat Sink, 1 HDD

Total estimated price (with available numbers before tax) = 1957.84

This thing will be a monster server with dual Quad proc, 12Gb of Ram, 4 NIC, 1.5Tb of storage (for Raid, etc), built with mostly server tech (proc/mobo/ram)… how can it not make your mouth water.

Considering I looked at HP and Dell and couldn’t find a Tower server with near the horsepower at $2,000. Yes, it did have the processor, just not exactly what I was looking for. HP links below:

HP ML330 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,499.00 (x1 Proc, 4GB ram)
HP ML350 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,385.00 (x2 Proc, 6GB ram)

I’ve added [another] blog to my blogging portfolio, this one will probably get a good portion of my attention for a few days/weeks… I hope for a good amount of time, as this is definitely where I want my career path to go.

Check it out, leave comments.

BlackHat

This stuff FASCINATES me!
Blackhat.com

The Archive is awesome, to read some of the white papers on exploits and attack vectors and just amazing ways to utilize technology to discover things. Something that blew my mind was the forensic-proof rootkit paper, 44 pages of how to dig in and confuse the hell out of investigators while doing whatever.

This stuff doesn’t fascinate me for the malicious reasons, but the sheer genius that is used to leverage the tech on hand to come to new outcomes.

Home

I have had 2 or 3 DELL computers for years that I finally turned into little centOS boxes a while back, I have apache and mysql running on them so they act as good little webservers and actually on a few occasions made at least one available to the wold by my IP.

Well now the day has come (a few days ago) where the boxes are here and not just by IP anymore: http://demons.homedns.org:45457. I have to use a higher port because Cox doesn’t like me being a web host :P .

I have a ventrilo server set up and in the process of configuring a IRC server. Like the site says: more functionality and information to come soon.

Tegra? New Zune

So I’ve been fascinated by Tegra and it’s capabilities and it may be coming out soon!

We’ll see, I dunno if I’ll buy a Zune HD but if it has Tegra I’ll definitely put some thought toward it!

Almost 3 weeks

Holy moly time has flown since the little guys showed up… they are getting bigger by the day (possibly hour if not faster). We are doing well (the wife and I) and are dealing with a little sleep deprivation, the boys are hovering around a 3-4 hour feeding schedule and most often take more than an hour to fully eat before they go back to sleep. I’ll get more pictures posted, I need to resize all the ones taken on the camera so they are a little more upload friendly.

Halo3 and WoW

Yeah… I’m playing both… and I hate Arizona drivers.

More on all of those later (just giving the site some love).

The Game

So…

I’ve been not so quietly contemplating suspending WoW for a bit… the new expansion is out very soon, the peaceful realms are now starting to stir. They are getting busier and busier forming queues when trying to log in, I don’t see my bro-in-law often enough to do much with him…

And I’ve been rocking Halo3! 360voice

Last night I shot a hornet out of the sky and dropped it on an unsuspecting teammates head… me just saying that sounds odd, and it was merely a coincidence that the vehicle killed him. It was not merely a coincidence that he kicked me from the game because of the betrayal. One of the really really awesome things about Halo3 is you can replay the entire game after finishing up a multiplayer match. So the wife and I waded through about ~3:20 (3 minutes 20 seconds) of game play to figure out how I killed this guy. It wasn’t the fool that jumped on the tank… no it was the guy that had a bit of hornet wreckage clip his head after I shot it out of the air. Silly Bungie… but they rock.

SO Failover does kill!

The rogue has gone Epic!

So playing WoW and all I’ve finally got my first epic flying mount! It’s pretty exciting! For those of you not familiar with the “mount” system in WoW… well, mounts are horses that your character rides on like a knights steed or mount. In wow there are a bunch of different mounts all with varying flavors of pizazz! Now the thing that sets normal mounts aside from special ones are the speed at which they travel and where the mount comes from, and how much the skill cost.

Epic means well… Epic. It’s the top of the line (there is legendary but still epic is prime and obtainable) so on the regular ground mounts at level 60 you purchased or quested for a 100% mount versus the 60% mount from level 30 (now, used to be 40). When you hit level 70 you paid 900 Gold to get a 60% Flying mount and could fly Slowly all over the place. They also have Epic flying, this costs 5,200 Gold and is more obtainable now with daily quests and the amount of gold they generate. In addition to the inflated prices on the auction house, don’t buy just farm and sell!

Regardless, my Rogue Darkespectre now has her 300 riding skill and a swift blue Gryphon. I will be doing the Netherwing quests as well as the Sha’tar Skygaurd in order to get the big Netherdrake mount and the Red Nether ray… both of which will take some time and serious rep (reputation) grinding. And maybe along the way I will save up some money to buy the 5k skill on my hunter too, he’s already exalted with the Skygaurd and I have been eying that red nether ray for a bit, gotta love a sinister looking hunter on a cool nether ray.

Enough wow talk before I get blocked at work again…

Movie: Wanted

Go watch this movie!!

The wife and I enjoy watching movies, with rising theater costs we probably like watching movies a little more than we should. However, Wanted was Awesome!!

As I told Ammon, I think it falls in the same category as Equilibrium (Equilibrium still has the leg up on Wanted though) … but it is fantastic and exceeded my expectations. Interesting twists as well.

Go watch this movie: Action, Blood lots of blood, and some pretty funny comedy too!

Food

So looking for a good hobby that both the wife and I really really enjoy that is easy, close to home, and not terribly expensive -> Cooking.

Cooking is going to be our new fun thing to do, it was all spawned off of cooking chicken in oil and fresh garlic… mmmm such a good smell. Cooking might be semi pricey but the return on investment is incredible. The more food we make is cheaper than going to restaurants, healthier, fun, and a learning experience.

The one rule we will have to stick with is: we have to try out the recipe on ourselves before cooking it for company.

More on this later!

On-Call

So this weekend was my first full weekend on-call, and I didn’t get any calls! yay! The restaurant in Scottsdale “Sopporo” (can’t remember the spelling right now) was quite good, but to far of a drive for a regular dining experience.

We had family in town for the weekend, they will be flying out today. It was good to see them.

Live was having trouble yesterday, the network wasn’t allowing some users to connect, and those of us who could connect seemed to fight with the matchmaking system in getting partys setup. CoD4 wouldn’t even detect a Live connection.

Last night it was decided (again for some) that “Stardust” is a fantastic movie, lets just say there was a little opposition prior to the movie being played.

The 360

Well its been purchased!

I am the owner of an X box 360 (360 for short). Now I need to think up something inventive for a tag name, and for some reason I am leaning towards “failover” “failoverdemon” or “failoverdaemon”… after running the name “failover” past people it is agreed from the people in the know that failover is a good name, we’ll see if it passes the wife test.

More later…

Amok

Now that I am working in the mornings I get to BS with Ammon… I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing.

This morning I was notified that his coffee machine has moved 8 minutes forward in time so it doesn’t make him coffee when he wakes up. Eh, kinda odd… but its Ammon so its ok.

Then it developed into this: Coffee.

Yeah, I don’t think I am allowed to talk to ammon in the mornings when I plan on working… it just leads to me leaning back in my chair trying to quietly laugh as I fight the tears.

I’d post the contents of our converstation but it started to go bad when he decided pepper (Sgt. Pepper, his chinchilla) needed a pet. A real live pet dwarf hammster, to be in a cage of its own contained in peppers cage … “recursive rodents”. Only to spin wildly out of control when I tried to explain ‘Red Vs Blue’ … we wont go there.

Eh, I’ll run the risk of … falling out of my chair? in the mornings.

Busy…

So I am busy at work… its fun having a new job and I am finally getting used to my new schedule.

Nick, I removed your comments that linked to you website. The reason for this is your www.*****.com (not going to link) seems to have a virus and a bunch of spam links, you’re going to want to check that out.

We watched the Golden Compass this weekend, it’s very good (rushed in some places) but good… it is also the first of at least two movies and will pull a cliffhanger on you.

I have heard very good things about Hitman and hope to see that one of these days.

Boy do I have a lot of work to update things on here… that will have to happen later.

~Paul
