VM Server Box (Wish list)

So in an exercise to build a VM box that will take care of replacing all of the other machines on my desk I have employed Newegg.com with some server cues from HP/Dell.

Here’s the wish list:
Processor – Intel Xeon E5520 (Newegg) — Buy 1 proc now, buy a second later.
Heat Sink – Intel HS (Newegg) — Buy another with proc #2 later
MoBo – Intel S5520HC (Newegg) — Dual CPU support, onboard dual nic and video, 24GB of ram
HDD – WD 500GB 7200RPM (Newegg) x2 (maybe x3)
Ram – Kingston 6GB kit (Kingston) — buy another set for the 2nd proc when needed

Things to left to find/price out:
Power Supply, Case

Cost:
Proc (x1) = 384.99
Mobo = 434.99
RAM (1x6GB) = 242.00
HDD (x1) = 69.99
Heat Sink = 29.45

Current desired config cost (before tax) = 1231.41

Things to add in the future:
Proc x2, 6GB more of Ram, 2 NICs, 1 Heat Sink, 1 HDD

Total estimated price (with available numbers before tax) = 1957.84

This thing will be a monster server with dual Quad proc, 12Gb of Ram, 4 NIC, 1.5Tb of storage (for Raid, etc), built with mostly server tech (proc/mobo/ram)… how can it not make your mouth water.

Considering I looked at HP and Dell and couldn’t find a Tower server with near the horsepower at $2,000. Yes, it did have the processor, just not exactly what I was looking for. HP links below:

HP ML330 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,499.00 (x1 Proc, 4GB ram)
HP ML350 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,385.00 (x2 Proc, 6GB ram)

Technology

Technology is an interesting and very much evolving entity.

What if you had a hand in the next generation technology? Or the generation after that? What would you want available that is beyond bleeding edge today?

Who is to say you are not the driver of this tech, and how do we exercise our ability to push on the creators of tech to get there or make it ourself?

Season of Change

The winds of change are afoot.

It is time to cut ties with the negative, release from the death hold of the chaos, move away from corrupt and monotonous and test the waters through a new door.

I’m not talking about me, but it’s time for the wife to move away from her current company. Much better for her and her dreams and sanity.

Another friend at work put his 2 weeks in yesterday, this is hopefully a killer move for him. I bet it is a nerve wracking experience leaving a place you’ve worked at through thick and thin for the last 6 years. It will be a sad day to see him go as he has defined and built absolutely critical pieces of this company. It will be interesting to see what ripple effect will be seen as we lose such a core and critical part of our environment.

;) It’s a game, you’ve got to know when to bulldoze through or fold and keep your wits about you.

Embrace the change, be dynamic, don’t just survive -> LIVE!

Goin back to DOS

So we have an situation at work where we need to delete around 7 million files from a NetApp, it’s something that has to be done. An associate was working on getting a powershell script all worked up to handle the CSV lists when another Admin reminded him of something much much simpler… DOS.

In this day and age with the technology available we’re going to a simple but super effective del command in dos. It’s going to be awesome, 13 batch files with del z:\this\that\here with over 7 million files cleaned in a matter of minutes. No scripting fubars only deleting what was specified, no fat fingering, pure awesome!

Been a little bit

Life goes crazy sometimes because of work… End of the month means more work for the wife, and the beginning of the month means more work for me as we report about the previous month. It’s tiring.

Windows7 freaking rocks, found out today that it definite handles networking better than XP with no contest. Wireless-N gave me 100mb wired cable speeds a good distance away from the AP. I’m impressed. I need to learn more about linux one of these days too.

Windows7

So I have Windows7 install on my newest desktop, it’s pretty slick… Aero is nice, Linux calls it Vista… it’s the 32bit install though. So I got the 7000 build of the 64bit and have yet to install it. I am waiting for a friend to hook me up with possibly a more recent/stable build off of technet if it will even work.

The reason for me writing about it however is the lame fact that M$ is going to release the different versions of W7. Yay for marketing stunts, don’t get the ‘starter edition’ it only lets you run 3 programs at a time, WHAT THE HELL?! Seriously folks?

Anyhow, the boys are growing like crazy we have pictures I need to upload. I am trying to get into a Systems Administrator position here at work, it sounds like its almost a done deal but still waiting on the offer.

Hindsight

It is quite exciting to be involved in something that is sizeable and watch it complete. It is interesting to go back through the series of events leading up to completion and build a timeline of those events.

I do this for work, I go through and look at what happend with an event and the culmination of events that I took part in related to the event. I am supposed to approach this as a 3rd party, non-biased, observer. My dilema is not with other people but with myself. As I “walk” through the events as I recreate them I realized that I was in part a driving force for a breakdown in communication.

Before I start ragging on myself to hard I will gladly admit it was an honest mistake and illustrates to me the difference between email and verbal communication.

I am living and learning, it is exciting.

HTML

So I took an HTML class and found out that I wasn’t going to be learning the HTML 4.01 like I signed up to learn. Why? you ask… Because 4.01 is not the current standard! It appears we have moved on to XHTML (extensible Hypertext Markup Language) I can’t remember the number behind the XHTML standard.

So coding is cool, but I always struggled with CSS as I thought it was mainly regarding colors and was seemingly very different from HTML and PHP, but I ran into it everywhere. I had tried to stumble through a book once before with little avail. Sitting down in class I learned two incredibly important lessons or parts of good XHTML coding -

and basic CSS.

I will now be working on the SoundWear Apparel website and probably will make a new splash page for Demon Werx as well.

Cool stuff!

Apache/PHP/MySQL

So my friend Milo sent me to a website PortableApps.com where I found a very cool little set of programs that allow me to run an Apache Server with PHP and MySQL with a one click install.

The package is called XAMPP. The home page is XAMPP and this thing is Awesome!

I just rebuilt one of the triplets to run the XAMPP package and I believe it will allow me to run a Mercury Mail server as well. I will keep this updated and possibly link more stuff too it.

Coding – Authenticate me

The Coding Gauntlet has been thrown!

I am currently working on a PHP based authentication page, this appeared “easy” but it is not. It’s freakin cool and fun though!

AMD QuadCore

The 4×4 is there…

But it is sadly misunderstood. I read an article about this newest processor released by AMD, it was extremely frustrating for a number of reasons. First, to mock a smaller company such as AMD for it not beating Intel to market of the “Quadcore” chips got annoying quickly. Second, this is a true Quadcore and not 2 dual cores glued together, Intel has a tendency to do this in order to get a chip to market in a hurry. Third, this is not a gaming chip people! Get that through your thick skulls. A Megauser is not a Mega-Gamer, or a Gamer, or whatever…

Ok, I think I am almost done with my little Rant.

This chip, the FX-74, is going to be hot! Combined with a dual socket Mother Board this thing is going to be smoking! Combine it with an OS or programs that are able to take 4 cores at first and an additional 4 cores when it gets in full swing and watch the results.

Yes, the stuff PC computer ran it through found it seriously lacking compared to the Conroe dual-cores meaning it was farther behind the “Qx” lines from Intel I don’t think was an accurate representation of the chipset. (This is my blog and the 2 of you that read it are gonna get my opinions, jk) This chip set and board are going to be Awesome in the realm they are working after – the Workstations, server grade hardware, strapped in a situation that warrants the need for the usability of a workstations with the power of a server.

Please don’t take the word “Megauser” and think it is meaning Gamers, we don’t have anything that could use this processor correctly, yet. When we do, they will have an FX chip out there that will handle it well.

I love AMD, and I am going to love the Merom processor we are getting in the Wife’s laptop. For now it’s all about performance.

SoundWear Apparel Company

I talked about a project a little while back that I am working on… Well, we have been incorporated now so it’s official – Soundwear Apparel Company exists! I have been named the Director of IT, cool title.

Currently I am researching server and computer information to find what configurations will best suit the company now, and allow for maximum growth in the future within a realistic budget.

This is what the mail server I was talking about earlier is for.

I will probably comment on this for a while.
