2nd Router … again

So a while back I expressed extreme displeasure with my Linksys 350N router, it sucks… the wireless recently has been dropping out or causing severe lag when on the xbox. Instead of investing in a decent piece of hardware I am once again improvising using my old WRT54G that I was hoping to replace with the 350N.

Well they are both up and with some forethought I was able to do it as easily as swapping the cable from one router to the other and changing IPs. Will this solve it? No, temporary at best.

One thing I found interesting is the average ping time to the 54G has increased, but instead of going from the switch to the router, I’ve added a second hop, so there has been a slight increase. I am still toying with the idea of offloading DHCP to a computer, or at least to another router. Sadly the old old netgear I have has no custom firmware, because unlike linksys it’s not running on an open source linux base.

I need to build a router/firewall one of these days, just for fun. I have a lot of “needs” that are just wants, but hey there is no pain in dreams and aspirations.

Monster Toad

So I was clearing off the branches from the garbage can in the back yard when I discovered a monster toad near the gate under the branches. I’ll put pictures up here when I get them off of my work phone, the iPhone has a decent camera in it.

Microsoft SMB Zero Day Bug

This is a serious deal, there is a zero day exploit that is out there that works… However, you’d have to poke some serious holes in your firewall to open yourself up to it. (Don’t freak out yet) If you know how to configure your firewall just make sure you have port 139 and 445 blocked and you should be golden… They need to patch soon as it really is simple to drop a Vista machine.

More on this soon hopefully.

~Update~

Windows Server 2008 is susceptible to the flaw and drops like Vista.

Windows Server 2008 r2 (Windows7 like) does not crash to the flaw.

Is going to ask why we are not using r2 at work now.

Windows7 Ultimate

I installed W7 Ultimate at home, it’s shiny. My computer scored a 5.8 out of 7.9 and that was because of the processor and memory – the rest is I think mid 6′s up to 6.8.

Exciting stuff.

I got an iPhone from work, we’ll see how it goes for a professional tool it seems kinda fun though my personal cell phone is more useful when it comes to data links and internet access. The iPhone is fun.

I got an 8Gb 3G (it was free, the 3Gs is not).
