Ventilation

I learned two important lessons this year about ventilation, well more about filtering for the Air Conditioner.

If you go with a higher filter you will see interesting results – the more pleats so more particles filtered will cause your AC to work harder, reduce air throughput, and raise costs. We moved from a $17-20 (for 1) filter to, which we ran all summer, to a $6 (for 3) set about a month ago, and I think we’ve already filled those up.

So expensive crazy filters are good for somethings but a little harsh on the budget when it comes to initial cost, wear and tear, and electricity.

Second lesson I learned was about running the fan the whole time, yes this definitely increases the cost and wear and tear on the unit… however it also keeps air moving around the house which is especially useful when you have not so great smells running amok inside while your gone. It also adds background noise, you can nearly hear everything without the fan running. Spooky stuff really :P ok, not really.

Home

I have had 2 or 3 DELL computers for years that I finally turned into little centOS boxes a while back, I have apache and mysql running on them so they act as good little webservers and actually on a few occasions made at least one available to the wold by my IP.

Well now the day has come (a few days ago) where the boxes are here and not just by IP anymore: http://demons.homedns.org:45457. I have to use a higher port because Cox doesn’t like me being a web host :P .

I have a ventrilo server set up and in the process of configuring a IRC server. Like the site says: more functionality and information to come soon.

Goin back to DOS

So we have an situation at work where we need to delete around 7 million files from a NetApp, it’s something that has to be done. An associate was working on getting a powershell script all worked up to handle the CSV lists when another Admin reminded him of something much much simpler… DOS.

In this day and age with the technology available we’re going to a simple but super effective del command in dos. It’s going to be awesome, 13 batch files with del z:\this\that\here with over 7 million files cleaned in a matter of minutes. No scripting fubars only deleting what was specified, no fat fingering, pure awesome!

IRC

Is working on getting an IRC server running, I have the config written up, just need to play with it to get it going. I hope to be adding some PHP portions to the front/splash page, though I’ve been saying that for years.

About IRC, maybe I’ll just put a trivia channel that sounds cool.

Been a little bit

Life goes crazy sometimes because of work… End of the month means more work for the wife, and the beginning of the month means more work for me as we report about the previous month. It’s tiring.

Windows7 freaking rocks, found out today that it definite handles networking better than XP with no contest. Wireless-N gave me 100mb wired cable speeds a good distance away from the AP. I’m impressed. I need to learn more about linux one of these days too.
