VM Server Box (Wish list)
So in an exercise to build a VM box that will take care of replacing all of the other machines on my desk I have employed Newegg.com with some server cues from HP/Dell.
Here’s the wish list:
Processor – Intel Xeon E5520 (Newegg) — Buy 1 proc now, buy a second later.
Heat Sink – Intel HS (Newegg) — Buy another with proc #2 later
MoBo – Intel S5520HC (Newegg) — Dual CPU support, onboard dual nic and video, 24GB of ram
HDD – WD 500GB 7200RPM (Newegg) x2 (maybe x3)
Ram – Kingston 6GB kit (Kingston) — buy another set for the 2nd proc when needed
Things to left to find/price out:
Power Supply, Case
Cost:
Proc (x1) = 384.99
Mobo = 434.99
RAM (1x6GB) = 242.00
HDD (x1) = 69.99
Heat Sink = 29.45
Current desired config cost (before tax) = 1231.41
Things to add in the future:
Proc x2, 6GB more of Ram, 2 NICs, 1 Heat Sink, 1 HDD
Total estimated price (with available numbers before tax) = 1957.84
This thing will be a monster server with dual Quad proc, 12Gb of Ram, 4 NIC, 1.5Tb of storage (for Raid, etc), built with mostly server tech (proc/mobo/ram)… how can it not make your mouth water.
Considering I looked at HP and Dell and couldn’t find a Tower server with near the horsepower at $2,000. Yes, it did have the processor, just not exactly what I was looking for. HP links below:
HP ML330 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,499.00 (x1 Proc, 4GB ram)
HP ML350 G6 – E5520 Based tower (HP.com) — $2,385.00 (x2 Proc, 6GB ram)
